Stimulates leukocyte production. For neutropenia. SE: precipitate sickle crisis, vasculitis, bone pain. G-CSF and GM-CSF enhance microbicidal activity of neutrophils in addition to stimulating their production. Filgastrim (rhG-CSF), PEG-Filgastrim (longer half life)
Stimulate platelet production. prevent chemo induced thrombocytopenia. SE: fluid retention, atrial fib. rhIL-11 Oprelvekin
Stimulate leukocyte production. For Neutropenia, also increases eosinophil count. SE: hypotension, tachycardia, bone pain. rhGM-CSF Sargramostim
induce fetal hemoglobin. for sickle cell anemia. SE: myelosuppression, skin ulcer. Contra: severe bone marrow depression Hydroxyurea
Induce fetal hemoglobin. For myelodysplastic synd. SE: cardiac arrhythmia/failure, pancytopenia, cerebral hemorrhage/pulm edema. may pose long term cancer risk. Decitabine
For colon CA (in combo w/ 5 flurouracil). SE: leuko/neutro/thrombocytopenias, seizures. Thought to cause macrophages and T cells to secrete cytokines and other factors that supress tumor growth. Levamisole
For acute promyelocytic leukemia and acne vulgaris. SE: ATRA synd (fever, acute resp distress, pulm infiltrates, edema and weight gain, organ fail), bone pain, skin and mucosal dryness. ATRA=all-trans retinoic acid. Tretinoin
Activate erythropoietin receptor. for anemias from cancer, chemo, chronic kidney disease. SE: cardiac arrhythmia/failure. May be abused by athletes Epoetin alfa, Darbepoetin (longer half life)
