Matter

Matter Unit Vocabulary

mixture two or more types of matter that are mixed together but keep their own properties
evaporation the process in which water particles change from a liquid to a gas
solution a mixture in which one or more types of matter are mixed evenly in another kind of matter
mass the amount of matter making up an object
gas a state of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space or have a definite shape
temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is
weight the measure of the pull of gravity between an object and Earth
solid a state of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
filter a tool used to separate things by size, a screen that holds bigger pieces while letting smaller pieces fall through
length the number of units that fit along one edge of an object
thermometer an instrument used to measure temperature
standard units a unit of measure that people agree to use
liquid a state of matter that takes up a definite amount of space but has no definite shape
scale an instrument used to measure weight
