Matter Unit Vocabulary

| evaporation | the process in which water particles change from a liquid to a gas |
| solution | a mixture in which one or more types of matter are mixed evenly in another kind of matter |
| mass | the amount of matter making up an object |
| gas | a state of matter that does not take up a definite amount of space or have a definite shape |
| temperature | a measure of how hot or cold something is |
| weight | the measure of the pull of gravity between an object and Earth |
| solid | a state of matter that has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| filter | a tool used to separate things by size, a screen that holds bigger pieces while letting smaller pieces fall through |
| length | the number of units that fit along one edge of an object |
| thermometer | an instrument used to measure temperature |
| standard units | a unit of measure that people agree to use |
| liquid | a state of matter that takes up a definite amount of space but has no definite shape |
| scale | an instrument used to measure weight |
