ATOMS
Chapters 17, 18
| atom | the smallest part of an element with all the properties of the element |
| element | fundamental material consisting on only one type of atom |
| nucleus | core of the atom; has protons and neutrons |
| proton | positively charged particle in the nucleus |
| neutron | particle in the nucleus; no charge |
| electron | negatively charged particles in an atom; in orbitals around the nucleus |
| atomic number | identifies the element; number of protons |
| atomic mass number | number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus |
| isotope | atoms with the same number of protons, different number of neutrons |
| group | vertical column in the periodic table |
| period | horizontal row in the periodic table |
| metal | most elements of the periodic table; generally shiny, opaque, malleable |
| metalloid | one of six elements with properties of both metals and non-metals |
| non-metal | element that is not malleable, not ductile, poor conductor |
