| greenhouse effect | process by which heat radiated from Earth's surface is trapped and reflected back to Earth by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere |
| hypothesis | proposed solution to a problem or explanation of how something works; a hypothesis can be tested to see if it is correct |
| independent variable | in an experiment, the factor changed to see what effect it will have on the dependent variable |
| model | representation of an idea or process to make it understandable, using a diagram, formula or physical structure |
| observation | using your senses to gather information |
| ozone layer | layer of Earth's atmosphere that contains plentiful ozone, which absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun |
| physical science | study of matter and energy |
| scientific law | rule that describes a pattern in nature and predicts what will happen under specific conditions |
| technology | application of scientific knowledge to improve quality of human life |
| theory | solution to a problem; former hypothesis that has been tested with repeated experiments and observations and found always to work |
