| Conflict | In literature, this is the tension or problem in the story. It is the struggle between opposing forces. |
| Conflict Resolution | The part of the plot in which the problem of the story is resolved or worked out. |
| Connotation | The idea and feeling associated with a word as opposed to only its literal dictionary definition. |
| Consonance | The repetition of a constant sound, especially at the end of words. Examples: Tin Man, Curse, Strong String |
| Denotation | The exact dictionary meaning of a word. |
| Details | This helps the reader better understand the topic sentence or main idea. May include facts, observations, descriptions, and commentary. |
| Dialogue | Words spoken between characters. |
| Direct Characterization | Occurs when the author directly states a character's traits or makes direct comments about a character's nature. |
| Drama | A story about human emotions or humanity, which is written with the purpose of being acted out by performers. |
| Fable | A very short story used to teach a moral lesson. |
| Fact | Something that is true. This can be shown to exist or be something that has actually happened. |
| Fairy Tale | An old story that was passed down by word of mouth for many of the years before finally being written down. |
| Falling Action | This is a series of events that take place after the climax and lead to the resolution or conclusion. |
| Fantasy | Stories that are fictional, unlikely tales that have strange or imagined characters, places and events. |
| Fiction | Refers to made up stories. Writing that is not true, factual or real. My be based on real people, places and events. |
| Figurative Language | Literally not true, imaginative. Examples: similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and idioms. |
