Chap 12 Energy & E

Discussion Questions

QuestionAnswer
1. Name 6 forms of energy. thermal, chemical, light, electrical, sound, nuclear
2. Name 3 ways that fossil fuels are converted into other of energy. Coal is used to produce steam which run electric generators. Petroleum --gas, kerosene, wax Natural gas - heating systems, stoves, ovens, vehicles
3. Name 2 energy resources and list their advantages and disadvantages. Biomass - Renewable and Inexpensive Requires large areas of farm land & produce smoke Water Renewable & no air pollution Requires dams that disrupt rivers ecosystem & only available where there r rivers
4. Where does the sun get its energy to light and heat the earth? In the sun hydrogen nuclei join together to make a larger helium nucleus. This reaction know as fusion gives off a huge amount of energy. The sun light and heat come from these reactions.
5. How is electrical energy produced at a nuclear power plant? A NPP generates thermal E that boils water to make steam. Steam turns turbine which run generator.Spinning generator changes kinetic energy into electrical E. Nuclear fission causes uranium atom to split into 2 smaller nuclei which releases Nuc energy.
6. Explain how gravitational potential energy changes the higher or lower something is placed. Gravitational potential energy is the potential energy that an object has because of its height & mass. The higher an object is, the more gravitational potential it has. And the more mass an object has, the more gravitational potential energy it has. RC
7. Why is it impossible to create a perpetual motion machine. Some wasted thermal energy always results from energy conversions.
8. Explain how the energy from wood fire actually comes from the sun. PH uses light E 2 make new substances that have chemical E. The chemical E from a tree can be Δ to thermal E when burned. Chemical E n food u eat is Δ another type of chem E ur body can used then that Δ to kinetic E that is used in everything u do.
9a. Know when something has the most kinetic and the most potential energy - TOP OF ROLLERCOASTER (Example: with a roller coaster or pendulum) When you are at the top of a roller-coaster ride, you have a lot of gravitational potential energy but not much kinetic energy.
9b. Know when something has the most kinetic and the most potential energy - COMING DOWN ROLLERCOASTER (Example: with a roller coaster or pendulum) As you come down again, the gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, so the cart gets faster and faster.
9c. Know when something has the most kinetic and the most potential energy - BOTTOM OF ROLLERCOASTER (Example: with a roller coaster or pendulum) At the bottom of the ride you have much more kinetic energy but much less gravitational potential energy.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
