| Light Vocab Words | Light Vocab defintions |
|---|---|
| Optics | the study of light |
| optics | the study of light |
| apparent magnitude | brightness of a star as it appears on earth |
| absolute magnitude | amount of light a start actually gives off |
| ambient light | light that is all around us/you |
| photons | the smallest energy packet of light (quanta) or other electromagnetic radiation of a given wave length that can exist |
| convex | lenses with a curve that curves outward |
| concave | lenses with a curve that curve inward |
| electromagnetic spectrum | the range of wavelengths over which electromagnetic radiation extends |
| opaque | not allowing any light to pass through |
| transparent | allowing light of a certain wavelengths to pass through without significant scattering (light will pass through, you can see through) |
| translucent | light passes through but you can't see clearly, example; stained glass or frosted glass |
| umbra | the inner, dark region of a shadow. No portion of the light can be seen within the umbra |
| penumbra | an area of a semi-shadow formed around the umbra that can be produced only by a diffuse or large light |
| shadow | an area of darkness that forms behind an object when the object blocks a source of light |
| light year | the distance light travels in one year |
| infrared | wavelengths of invisible electromagnetic radiation that are slightly longer than those of visible red light |
| What is the speed of light? | 299,792,458 meters per second |
