ROK Vocabulary Set 1

QuestionAnswer
Alliteration the use of repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
Allusion The mention of an historical or famous literary work, song, artwork, person, place religion or thing.
Anecdote A short and interesting story based on a real life event. It is a brief narrative of a memorable, amusing, inspiring, or interesting, incident involving a real person, famous or not.
Antagonist A character in a story or poem that frustrates or works against the main character (protagonist) in some way. Often part of the problem, conflict, or an obstacle for the protagonist.
Archetype A recurring pattern of character, situations, or symbols which are universal, connecting to all humans over time.
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds. Can contribute to the meaning of work, to its musical quality, and to its unity.
Author's purpose Every time an author writes, he or she has this in mind.
Autobiography This is a story of one's life as written by oneself. (the "I" point of view)
Cause and Effect Something that makes something else happen & what happens as a result of the cause.
Character An imaginary person, animal, or creature created by the writer.
Character Analysis Considering the character's dialogue, his appearance, his actions, his environment, his character type, what motivates the character, and if his motivation is consistent.
Character Trait This describes the personality features demonstrated consistently.
Characteristic Distinguishing quality, feature, or trait. This feature helps identify, tell apart or recognize.
Characterization This is how the writer informs readers about characters and makes characters seem real to the reader.
Climax This is the turning point, the point of peak interest, and the highest tension in the plot of the story. Usually occurs towards the end of the story.
Conclusion This is a decision based on careful consideration of facts and observations.
