acrostic poem a poem where the title is written vertically with each letter beginning the next line of the poem
free verse poem poems written free from the limitation of rhyme or rhythm
lyric poem an emotional, rhyming poem that has a musical rhythm. Their topics often explore romantic feelings or other strong emotions
narrative poem poetry that tells a story
stanza a group of lines in a poem
quatrain a type of stanza consisting of four lines that rhyme in some pattern
refrain/chorus phrases or lines of poetry that are separate in a poem and repeat throughout
hyperbole an exaggeration that is used to make a point
metaphor a comparison between two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”
personification when the speaker or writer gives human characteristics, qualities, or traits to an object
simile a comparison between two unlike things using the word “like” or “as”
idiom similes, metaphors, hyperboles, or personification. Non-native English speakers can be confused by these.
end rhyme when the end or final sound of two or more words in two lines of poetry are similar
internal rhyme when there are rhyming words within a line a poetry
rhyme scheme he pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem. Use letters to label sounds.
