SFS Science Unit 4

Motion and Forces

QuestionAnswer
force a push or pull
force sometimes you can see a ---- force acting, when a hits a tennis ball
result other times you can seee the ----- of the force
acting you know a force is ---- because something moves
wind, magnetic force, electic force are examples of force that can act on objects but cnnot be seen
gravity the force of attraction that exists beween any two objects
equally the force of gravity between two objects acts ----- on both objects
weakens; farther apart the force of gravity is greater between more massive objects and the force of gravity --- as 2 objects move ---- -----
length in science, forces are represented by arrows. an arrow's ---- shows the strength of a force
direction the ---- of the arrow shows the direction of the force
net force the combination of all the forces acting on an object
balanced forces equal forces acting in opposite directions
zero if the forces acting on an object are balanced, the net force is -----
unbalanced if the forces acting on an object are ---- the net force is not zero and the object moves as a result of the net force
speed equals the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to travel that distance
average speed equals the total distance traveled divided by the total distance time taken to travel the distance
instantaneous speed the speed of an object at one instant of time
velocity speed and direction of a moving object
kilogram (kg) SI unit for mass; approximately 2.2 pounds
acceleration change in velocity divided by the time for the change to occur; occurs when an object speeds up, slows down, or turns
momentum measure of how hard it is to stop a moving object; calculated as mass times velocity
mass amount of matter in an object
law of conservation of momentum the total momentum of objects that collide with each other is the same before and after the collision
vibrational a type of motion - music
circular a type of motion - ferris wheel' tire
straight line a type of motion - jet
distance the total length of the path taken between 2 points
does not distance ---- ---- include the direction of travel
total distance add the sum of the lengths of the paths taken
displacement includes both the shortest distance between 2 points and the direction of travel
far & in what direction displacement describes how ---- ----- ------ one point is from another
speed the distance an object moves in a certian period of time
speed --- = distance ÷ time
instantaneous speed the speed at any given point
velocity the measure of both the speed and direction of a moving object
changes velocity ----- when either speed or direction changes
acceleration the change in velocity during a particular ime period
speeds acceleration occurs when an object ---- up, slows down, or changes direction
constant there is no acceleration when the velocity is constant (cruise control)
momentum measure of how hard it is to stop an object
momentum P = mass X velocity
mass momentum increases if the ----- or velocity of the object increases

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
