| Question | Answer |

| Suffix | A group of letters with a special meaning when added to the end of a root or base word to change its meaning. |
| Superlative | Used to compare nouns. Old, Older, Oldest |
| Syllable | A single, uninterrupted sound found in a word. |
| Synonyms | The same or nearly the same thing are synonyms. |
| Syntax | The way words are put together in a sentence to make meaning. |
| Uppercase | Capital letters of the alphabet. |
| VCCV rule | Vowel, Consonant, Consonant, Vowel |
| Vowel | Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu (and sometimes y) |
| Word Family | "Related" words that share a common phonic sound or element. Sometimes they are called "chunks." |
| anti - | against, opposite, or opposed to |
| bi - | two , twice |
| cent - | hundred, hundredth |
| de- | reduce, reverse |
| dis - | not; do the opposite of |
| en- | bring or put into or on |
| ex - | from, out of, away |
