ROK Vocabulary

ROK Vocabulary 1-16

QuestionAnswer
ABC Order Alphabetizing, or sorting words in a list by letters of the alphabet.
Acronym Usually formed with the capital initial letters from key words in the full name.
Adjacent Vowels Vowels that are right next to one another in a given word.
Adjective Describing words that mostly describe nouns.
Adverb Words that describe verbs.
Antonyms Two words with opposite meanings
Base Word A word to which prefixes and suffixes may be added to create new and related words.
Closed Syllables Has a short vowel which is enclosed by a consonant.
Compound Word Made by joining two or more words. Sometimes they are hyphenated.
Consonant The letters of the alphabet that are not vowels.
context Clues Help the reader to figure out what a word means by looking at the words nearby.
Contraction A shortened form of a word or group of words, with missing letters marked by an apostrophe.
Digraph A pair of letters that make a single speech sound.
Double Consonants Two consonants right next to each other in a word.
gh sound rough, ghost, through
Greeek/Latin Roots A part of a word that contains the core meaning of the word.
