Gr 6 Magnetism

Ch 1 Magnetism and Electricity

QuestionAnswer
magnetism the attraction of a magnet for another object
magnetic pole the end area of a magnet where the magnetic effect is strongest
magnetic field the region of magnetic force around a magnet
magnetic field lines the lines that spread out from one pole, curve around a magnet, and return to the other pole
atom the smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element
element one of about 100 basic materials that make up all matter
nucleus the center of every atom
protons nuclear particles that carry a positive charge
electrons tiny particles that orbit the nucleus in an atom; has a negative charge
magnetic domain atoms whose magnetic fields are lined up in the same way
ferromagnetic material iron materials like iron, nickel and cobalt
permanent magnet a magnet made out of a material that keeps its magnetism
destroying a magnet dropping or heating a magnet
compass a device that has a magnetized needle that can spin freely
magnetic declination the angle between the north pole and the geographic pole
solar wind a stream of electrically charged particles flowing at high speeds from the sun
magnetosphere the region of Earth's magnetic field confined by the solar wind
aurora a glowing region caused by charged particles from the sun
electric charge positive or negative property of protons and electrons
electric current the flow of charge through a material
ampere (amp or A) the amount of charge that passes through the wire in a unit of time
electric circuit a complete path through which electric charges can flow
conductors allow electric current to flow through
insulators do not allow electric current to flow through
resistance the opposition to the movement of charges flowing through a material
superconductor a material that has no electrical resistance
solenoid a current-carrying coil of wire with many loops
electomagnet a solenoid with a ferromagnetic core; can be turned on and off

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
