What are the three categories of economic activity? Primary,secondary and teritary
What is primary economic activity? Economic activities in which unprocessed raw materials are produced
Give examples of primary activity.. Fishing,farming,mining and forestry
What is secondary economic activity? Economic activities that involve the manufacturing of unprocessed raw materials into finished goods
Give examples of secondary activity.. Baking,car manufacturing and chemical,steel and iron engineering
What is tertiary economic activity? Economic activities which involve providing a service
Give examples of tertiary activity.. Transport,tourism,insurance,teaching,hairdressing,banking and nursing
What are renewable resources? Resources that can be used again
Give examples of renewable resources Water,solar energy and fish
What is a non-renewable resource Resources that are used but can never be used again.
give examples of non-renewable resources Peat,coal and oil
What is sustainable exploitation? This occurs when the present generation uses a resource for its needs without placing the needs of the future generation at risk
Give an explanation of the first 2 steps in the water cycle 1. The sun evaporates sea water and turns it into a gas called water vapour. 2. As the water vapour rises it cools and condenses into tiny droplets and forms clouds
Give an explanation of the3rd and forth steps the water cycle 3. With further cooling and condensation percipitation occurs. 4. Most of the water is returned to the sea by surface run-offs,through rivers and by soaking through soil and rocks
What is water cycle also known as? The hydrological cycle
Before water can be used it goes through three processes what are these? The water is collected, it is stored in reservoirs, it is treated
How do we abuse our water supplies? Farmers use fertilisers to improve their land once this touches water the eater can become polluted,the same goes for untreated sewages
How can we help conserve water? Have a shower instead of a bath, use a watering can instead of a hose, when brushing our teeth we can turn off the tap
What is basin irrigation? Flooding or whole areas
Give an example of an irrigation scheme? The Central Valley Project in California
Give a brief account of what happened in this project? This project was set up in 1935 to move some of the water from the wetter northern end of the central valley to the dry southern end. The project also supplies water for towns and cites
What are the benefits to the Central valley project? During hot,dry summers water is used to irrigate land. Cites and towns in central valley recieve a regular supply of water
What are the disadvantages to the Central valley project? Dam construction is expensive and some farmland was flooded to create dams
What is meant by the term irrigation? The artificial watering of land
What is desertification? The term used to describe the spreading of deserts
What are the causes of desertification? Deforestation,animals overgrazing and global warmingf
What is a shelter-belt? A line of trees or plants planted to protect crops from the wind and to prevent soil erosion
