| diamonte | shows a change slowly occurring from the first to last line. in a diamond shape |
| tanka | Japanese poem with a syllable count of 5,7,5,7,7 |
| onomatopoeia | words that sound like their meaning. ex. BANG! |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike things using like or as. |
| haiku | Japanese poem that has a syllable count of 17 and only three lines. Pattern= 5,7,5 |
| synonyms | words that are different but have similar meanings |
| alliteration | the repetition of consonant sound |
| metaphor | comparison of two things by stating one is something else. |
| couplet | a pair of rhyming sentences |
| clerihew | a four lined rhyming poem describing a person |
| limerick | humorous 5 line poem that follows a rhyme pattern and a rhythm. |
| acrostic | each letter of it's title becomes the first letter of every sentence |
| antonyms | word pairs that have opposite meanings |
| repetition | repeated use of a vowel or consonant sound. Repeated use of line or phrase. |
| imagery | vivid words that appeal to the senses; creates a mental picture. |
