Introduction to Atoms

QuestionAnswer
the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same substance atom
a unifying explanation for a broad range of hypotheses and observations that have been supported by testing theory
the negatively charged particles found in all atoms electrons
a representation of an object or system model
a tiny, extremely dense, positively charged region in the center of the atom nucleus
According to the current theory, regions inside atoms where electrons are likely to be found electron clouds
What discovery demonstrated that atoms were not the smallest particles? the discovery of the electron
What did Dalton do in developing his theory that Democritus did not do? performed experiments
Why was it important for Thomson to repeat his experiment? he needed to determine whether the beam of particles was the same each time before he could say that the particles were part of all atoms.
In what part of the atom is most of its mass found? nucleus
the positively charged particles of the nucleus protons
the SI unit used to express the masses of particles in atoms atomic mass unit
the particles of the nucleus that have no charge neutrons
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom atomic number
atoms that have the same number of protons but have different numbers of neutrons isotopes
the sum of the protons and the neutrons in an atom mass number
the weighted average of the masses of all the naturally occurring isotopes of an element atomic mass
The metal thallium occurs naturally as 30% thallium-203 and 70% thallium-205. Calculate the atomic mass of thallium. 204.4 amu (see pg. 292 for explanation)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
