Freshman Poetry unit terms

| Assonance | repetition of vowel sounds in words that don't end with the same consonant |

| Imagery | words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| Metaphor | directly compares two unlike things by saying that one thing actually IS the other |
| Meter | a regular pattern of rhythm |
| Organic Form | may use unconventional spelling, punctuation, and grammar |
| Paraphrase | rephrase a poet's words with your own words |
| personification | when you give human qualities to objects, animals, or ideas |
| repetition | a sound, word, phrase, or line that is repeated for emphasis |
| rhyme | a sound device that enhances the musical quality of a poem |
| Simile | comparing two unlike items using like or as |
| stanza | grouped lines with function like paragraphs |
| traditional form | follows fixed rules, such as a specified number of lines, regular rhythm /rhyme |
| form | a poem's structure |
| rhythm | a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in each line of poetry |
| scansion | a process of charting meter |
| feet | the units of meter in a line of poetry |
| pentameter | five feet in a line of poetry |
