QuestionAnswer
What is a solid? state of matter in which materials have a definite shape and volume.
What is a liquid? state of matter in which material has a variable shape and definite volume.
What is a Gas? state of matter in which a material has a variable shape and volume.
What is kinetic energy? The energy an object has due to its motion.
What is the kinetic theory? The kinetic theory of matter says that all particles of matter are in constant motion.
What is the kinetic theory of gases? Constant motion of particles in a gas allows a gas to fill a container of any shape or size.
What is the behavior of liquids? Liquids take the shape of containers because particles in a liquid can flow to new locations. Volume is constant because particles stay close together.
What is the behavior of solids? Solids have a definite shape and volume because its particles vibrate around fixed locations.
What is a phase change? The reversible physical change that occurs when a substance changes from one state to another.
Does the temperature of a substance change during a phase change? No
What are the six common phase changes? Melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation, and deposition.
Is energy released during a phase change? Energy is either absorbed or released during a phase change.
What is an endothermic change? The system absorbs energy from its surroundings.
What is the Heat of Fusion? the amount of energy absorbed.
What is an exothermic change? System releases energy to its surroundings.
What is vaporization? Phase change in which a substance changes from a liquid to gas.
Where does evaporation take place? Evaporation takes place at the surface of a liquid and occurs at temperatures below the boiling point.
What is evaporation? The process that changes a substance from a liquid to a gas.
What is vapor pressure? Pressure caused by collisions of this vapor and the walls of the container.
What is condensation? Phase change in which a substance changes from a gas or vapor to a liquid.
What is sublimation? Phase change in which a substance changes from a solid to a gas or vapor without changing to a liquid first.
What is deposition? When a gas or vapor changes directly to a solid without changing to a liquid first.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
