QuestionAnswer
What are the three common states of matter? Solid, Liquid, Gas
What is the state of matter that has a definite volume and definite shape? Solid
What is the state of matter that has a definite volume and indefinite shape? Liquid
What is the state of matter that has a indefinite volume and indefinite shape? Gas
The energy that an object has due to its motion is called what? Kinetic energy
If there are collisions between particles of a gas and the walls of the container. What does this cause in the closed container of gas? It causes pressure in the closed container.
A scientist is doing an experiment with liquids. One of the liquids in a very hot one and the other is very cold. He finds out that the cold one is at zero degrees kelvin. What is this temperature called? The liquid is at its absolute zero.
What does the Charles law state? Also, what is the formula for the Charles law? The Charles law states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature in kelvins if the pressure and the number of particles of the gas are constant. The formula for it is... V1/T1= V2/T2
What does the Boyle's law state? Also, what is the formula for the Boyle's law? The Boyle's law states that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature and the number of particles are constant. The formula for the Boyle's law is... P1V1=P2V2
If a solid ice cube turns into liquid water, what type of phase change is this? Melting
What happens during an endothermic change? The system absorbs energy from its surroundings.
What is heat of fusion? The energy a substance must absorb in order to change from a solid to a liquid.
What happens during an exothermic change? The system releases energy to its surroundings.
What is it called when a substance changes from a liquid to a gas? Vaporization
What is the heat of vaporization? The energy of a substance must absorb in order to change from a liquid to a gas
When a substance changes from a liquid to a gas at temperatures below the substances boiling point. What is this known as? Evaporation
What causes water to increase as the temperature increases? Vapor pressure
When a substance changes from a gas or vapor to a liquid is known as what? Condensation
When a substance changes from a solid to a gas or vapor without changing to a liquid first is known as what? Sublimation
When a gas or vapor changes directly to a solid without first changing to a liquid is known as what? Deposition

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
