QuestionAnswer
What is the definition of a solid? A state of matter. Has a definite shape, and has a definite volume.
What is the definition of a liquid? A state of matter. Has no definite shape, but has a definite volume.
What is the definition of a gas? A state of matter. Has no definite shape, and no definite volume.
What is the definition of kinetic energy? The energy of an object has due to its motion.
What does the kinetic theory of matter say? All particles of matter are in constant motion.
What is the definition of pressure? The result of a force distributed over an area.
What is the definition of absolute zero? A temperature of 0 Kelvin(K).
What does Charle's law state? The volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature in kelvins if the pressure and the number of particles of the gas are constant.
What does Boyle's law state? The volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature and the number of particles are constant.
What does the combined gas law describe? The relationship among the temperature, volume, and pressure of a gas when the number of particles is constant.
What is the definition of a phase change? The reversible physical change that occurs when a substance changes from one state of matter to another.
What happens during an endothermic change? The system absorbs energy from its surroundings.
What is heat of fusion? The amount of energy required to change a substance temperature. Different for every substance. Measured in joules(J).
WHat happens during an exothermic change? The system releases energy to its surroundings.
What is vaporization? The phase change in which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas. And endothermic process.
What is heat of vaporization? The amount of energy a substance must absorb in order to change from a liquid to a gas. Different for every substance. Measured in joules(J).
What is evaporation? The process that changes a substance from a liquid to a gas at temperatures below a substance's boiling point.
What is vapor pressure? The pressure caused by the collisions of this vapor and the walls of the container.
What is condensation? The phase change in which a substance changes from a gas or vapor to a liquid.
What is sublimation? The phase change in which a substance changes from a solid to a gas or vapor without changing to a liquid first.
What is deposition? The phase change in which a gas or vapor changes directly into a solid without first changing to a liquid.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
