atom smallest particle of an element
element substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances
pure substances a substance that always has the same composition
compound substance that is made from 2 or more simpler substances. can be broken down.
solution a mixture that when dissolved is a homogeneous mixture. (salt water, windshield wiper fluid.)
suspension heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time. (muddy river, salad dressing)
physical properties can be observed when the substances in a material stay the same
viscosity the resistance a material has to flow
Conductivity is a material’s ability for allowing heat or electricity to flow through it
physical change occurs when some of the properties of a material change but the substances in the material remain the same.
chemical property can only be observed when the substances in a sample are changing
precipitate any solid that forms and separates from a liquid mixture
