| atom | smallest particle of an element |
| element | substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances |
| pure substances | a substance that always has the same composition |
| compound | substance that is made from 2 or more simpler substances. can be broken down. |
| solution | a mixture that when dissolved is a homogeneous mixture. (salt water, windshield wiper fluid.) |
| suspension | heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time. (muddy river, salad dressing) |
| physical properties | can be observed when the substances in a material stay the same |
| viscosity | the resistance a material has to flow |
| Conductivity | is a material’s ability for allowing heat or electricity to flow through it |
| physical change | occurs when some of the properties of a material change but the substances in the material remain the same. |
| chemical property | can only be observed when the substances in a sample are changing |
| precipitate | any solid that forms and separates from a liquid mixture |
