Ty Phy Sci Ch 10

Heat and Heat Technology

QuestionAnswer
a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object temperature
the increase in volume of a substance due to an increase in temperature thermal expansion
the lowest possible temperature (0 K, -273 C) absolute zero
How do you convert C temperature to F temperature? F=(9/5 x C)+32
Why do you think heating a full pot of soup on the stove could cause the soup to overflow? Due to thermal expansion, the volume of the soup will expand as it gets hotter, causing it to overflow the pot
the transfer of energy between objects that are at different temperatures heat
the total energy of the particles that make upa substance thermal energy
the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact conduction
substances that conduct thermal energy very well conductor
substances that do not conduct thermal energy very well insulator
the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or gas convection
the trasfer of energy through matter or space as electromagnetic waves, such as visible light and infrared waves radiation
the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 C. specific heat capacity
Explain how radiation is different from conduction and convection. it does not require a transfer of energy through particles of matter
Why do many metal cooking utensils have wooden handles? the metal conducts the heat while the wood is an insulator to keep you from burning your hand
How are temperature and heat different? temperature is the average kinetic energy of particles in a substace while heat os the transfer of energy between objects of differnt temperatures
the physical forms in which a substance can exist states of matter
the conversion of a substance from one physical form to another change of state
During a change of state, why doesn't the temperature of the substance change? energy added to or taken away from a substance during a change of state rearranges the particles of the substance rather than altering the temperature
When water evaporates (changes from a liquid to a gas), the air near the water's surface becomes cooler. Why? For water to evaporate, it must absorb energy. The air near the surface of the water transfers energy to the water causing the air to become cooler
Many cold packs used for sports injuries are activsated by bending the package, causing the substances inside to interact. How is heat involved in this process? The interaction of the substances absorbs so much energy, it causes the pack to feel colder.
a substance that reduces the transfer of thermal energy insulation
a machine that uses heat to do work heat engine
the excessive heating of a body of water thermal pollution
What is the difference between an external combustion engine and an internal combustion engine? An external combustion engine burns fuel on the outside and an internal combustion engine burns fuel on the inside

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
