Elements of LIterature

QuestionAnswer
Plot A series of related events.
Plot structure How the plot of the story is laid out, including the elements of Freytag's Pyramid and the story's chronology.
Freytag's Pyramid The graphic organizer designed to explain the plot structure of tragic dramas, though it is widely used for all of fiction.
Exposition Generally appearing at the opening of a story, this provides background information, including characters and setting.
Rising action Problems and complications arise from a conflict/conflicts, causing increasing difficulties for the main characters to overcome.
Climax The moment of highest intensity, also called the turning point, as this moment reveals the story's "winner" and "loser."
Falling Action After the main conflict's end, some problems or mysteries continue to be solved.
Catastrophe The final situation as it stands at the end of the plot.
Subplot A chain of events surrounding a conflict or mystery lower in intensity than that of the main plot.
Deus ex machina A power or character not previously mentioned in the plot creates a sudden happy ending to a major conflict.
In medias res When a story skips the exposition (as much as they can, anyway) and starts the plot with conflict and action already present.
Protagonist The main character, the one who propels the action forward.
