Grade 6 Rocks and Minerals Definitions

What is a mineral? A mineral is solid, inorganic (non-living), natural, crystalline, and is a chemical based structure
5 Examples of Minerals Ex: diamond, quartz, ruby, emerald, copper
How many minerals does Earth's crust contain? How many are common? About 4,000 types of minerals have been found in Earth's crust. Only two dozen are common.
5 test used to classify minerals Hardness, Luster, Color, Shape, Cleavage
What is a rock? A rock is a solid, natural material made up of one or more minerals. Scientists study them by looking at their color and their texture
Three types of rocks Sedimentary, Metamorphic, Igneous
Igneous Rocks Form when magma cools and hardens
Sedimentary Rocks Form in layers... oldest at the bottom. Only rocks that can have fossils inside them.
Metamorphic Rocks Forms when heat and pressure or chemical reactions change one type of rock into another type of rock. Ex.> Slate
What type of rock is a 1 on the Moh's Hardness Scale? 10? talc; diamond
Relative Dating the method which allows scientists to place past events in sequential order but NOT how long ago they occurred.
