Figurative Language

QuestionAnswer
simile makes a comparison using "like" or "as" (My love is like a red, red rose.)
metaphor makes a comparison without using "like" or "as" (You have a heart of stone.)
personification gives human characteristics to non-human objects (The wind whispered my name.)
imagery description that appeals to one of the five senses:see, hear, taste, touch, smell (The scarlet red rose was a stark contrast to her pale complexion.)
alliteration repetition of the beginning sound of a word (Sally sells sea shells by the sea shore.)
onomatopoeia a word used to represent a sound (Bang! Pow! Crash! Moo! Oink!)
idiom a group of words does not mean what it says (You hit the nail on the head.)
pun a play on words (Pinochio's performance is wooden.)
hyperbole exaggeration
