Literary Terms Column 4

QuestionAnswer
slang informal language consisting of words and expressions that are usually considered inappropriate for formal speech or occasions. (Ex. hogwash, take a hike, gee whiz)
sterotype a false idea (usually uninformed or unexamined) that someone has about a person or group
structure the organizational framework in a written work
style the way an author chooses and uses words and structure to get a message across or tell a story (wordy, complex, disjointed, informal, formal, descriptive,plain, elaborate, terse, flowery, simple, musical)
symbolism the use of symbols (concrete objects) to stand for ideas in a written work (Ex. rising storm as a symbol for approaching trouble)
synecdoche a metaphor in which a part of something is used to signify the whole or a whole represents a part (Ex. All hands on deck)
Syntax the structure of sentences (kinds of sentences, order within a sentence, grammatical construction, repetition)
theme the main idea or message in a selection (often, the theme is implicit and is seldom stated outright)
tone the writer's attitude or approach toward the subject (for example angry, bitter, silly, urgent,detached, apologetic,sarcastic, playful, harsh,informal analytical, superficial, enthusiastic,optimistic, argumentative, joyful)
understatement the opposite of exaggeration; bringing attention to a subject by treating it as if it were less important than it really is (Ex. Death is a just long nap)
voice the way a writer's personality shows through in the writing.
