6th grade Mystery Ma
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| matter | something that has mass and takes up space. |
| melting | process by which solid becomes liquid |
| phase | the state that matter is found in Solid, liquid and gas |
| prediction | a statement about something that will happen in future |
| properties | the qualities used to describe objects such as size, color, odor, texture, shape and weight |
| soluble | a material that can be dissolved in another material making a solution |
| variable | anything in an experiment that change from trial to trial |
| insoluble | a material that cannot be dissolved in another material |
| dissolves | when a material such as a solid seems to disappear if mixed with another material |
| control | anything in an experiment that is kept the same for every trial, so it doesn't interfere with your independent variable. |
| BTB | a chemical called an indicator that can be see to tell the difference between an acid and a base. BTB is yellow in an acid and blue in a base. BTB may look greenish in a substance that is neutral |
| base | a substance that causes BTB to stay blue: Baking Soda, Ammonia. Bases react fats and oils, which is why they are found in cleaning products. |
| acid | a substance which causes BTB to turn yellow, Examples include vinegar and lemon juice. Acids react with many other materials like bases and metals. |
| Turns BTB YELLOW | ACID |
| turns BTB BLUE | BASE |
| Three properties of matter | shape, mass, volume |
| atoms | all matter is made up of these particles |
| volume | the amount of matter an object has |
| container | liquid takes up shape in these |
| gases | do not have a shape of volume |
| liquids | do not have a definite shape but have volume |
| solids | have a definite shape and volume |
| ice, chair | examples of solids |
| juice, milk | examples of liquids |
| air, clouds | examples of gas |
| melting | what solid ice does when it changes to a liquid |
| independent variable | what you change on purpose in an experiment. |
| dependent variable | what happens or changes in an experiment because of the independent variable. |
| acid test | used to tell me if a material interacts with acid. If it bubbles and fizzes, it interacts |
| BTB test | tells me whether a material is an acid or a base. |
| iodine test | tells me whether or not material is a starch or not |
| water test | tells me if a material is soluble (disappears) or insoluble (doesn't disappear) |
