Unit 3 Atoms&PerTab.

QuestionAnswer
Atom The smallest particle of an element.
Atomic Mass The average mass of one atom of an element.
Atomic Mass Unit A unit of measurement for the mass of particles in atoms.
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron A tiny, negatively charged, high-energy particle that moves in the space outside the nucleus of the atom.
Family Elements in the same vertical column of the periodic table (also called a group).
Neutron Small, uncharged (neutral) particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Nucleus The central core of an atom containing protons and usually neutrons.
Period A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table.
Proton Small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Valence Electron The electrons that are farthest away from the nucleus of an atom and involved in chemical reactions.
