| compound | a substance that is made from two or more simpler substances and can be broken down into those simple substances |
| heterogeneous mixture | the parts of the mixture are noticeably different from the other. |
| homogeneous mixture | the substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance form the other |
| solution | when substances dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture |
| suspension | a heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time |
| colloid | contains some particles that are intermediate in size between the small particles in a solution and the larger particles in a suspension |
| matter | anything that takes up space and has mass (the stuff objects are made of) |
| impure matter | a substance which contains a mixture of elements |
| pure matter | has a fixed uniform makeup (always made of the same things in the same amounts) |
