Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass.
Two types of matter -Pure substances -Mixtures
How many types of matter exist? Infinite amounts
Pure matter Matter that has a fixed, uniform make-up
Two types of pure matter -Elements -Compounds
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance (containing only one type of atom)
Smallest piece of an element Atom
Compound Matter containing two or more elements joined together the same way every time (can be broken down into smaller substances and properties are different from the elements it is made of)
Impure matter A substance that contains a mixture of elements
Impure matter/Mixture: A material system made up by two or more different substances which are mixed, but not chemically combined.
