QuestionAnswer
Self-efficacy commonly defined as the belief in one's capabilities to achieve a goal or an outcome.
Double-blind study In an experiment when neither the experimenter or the subjects knows who received the placebo or the treatment.
Acute vs. chronic Acute refers to something that is short in duration, where chronic refers to something that is long and ongoing in duration.
Genotype vs. phenotype A genotype involves a person’s total genetic endowment, where a phenotype is the observed structural and functional characteristic that is a result of the interaction between a person’s genotype and the environment.
Three types of genotype-environment correlations (1)passive effect, resulting from genetic similarity of parents and children (2)evoke certain reactions from the social and physical environment called evocative effect (3) active effects where the child builds an environment that is congenial
Positive vs. negative reinforcement Positive and negative reinforcement is usually used to change a behavior. Positive reinforcement is when one adds a positive action with the new desired behavior (treat). Negative is when one takes away a action with a new desired behavior (nagging).
Dependent vs. independent variables The factor that is manipulated in an experiment is the independent variable, where the dependent variable is the observed change or the outcome of the experiment.
Generalization vs. discrimination Generalization a response is conditioned to one stimulus or set of stimuli, Discrimination is describing when a person learns to distinguish between similar stimuli and respond differently to the based on which ones are followed by reinforcement
Internal vs. external validity External validity is the extent in which the study can can be generalized to other samples, and internal validity reflects how confident we can be in the results of a particular study.
Neurotransmitters Chemical substances that are released into a synapse be the presynaptic neuron which transmit nerve impulses from one neuron to another
Equifinality vs. multifinality Equifinality is the ability to achieve the same result from differing initial conditions, while multifinality is suggests that similar conditions can lead to different results.
Comorbidity Describes the presence of two or more disorders in the same person. Common in people who have severe forms of mental disorders.
Incidence vs. prevalence Prevalence refers to the number of all active cases in a population during any given period of time, whereas incidence only refers to the number of new cases during any given period of time.
Concordance rate Concordance rate is the percentage of twins sharing a disorder or trait.
