What is a Pure Substance? A pure substance is a sample of matter with both definite and constant composition with distinct chemical properties.
What is Matter? the substance or substances of which any physical object consists or is composed: the matter of which the earth is made.
What are the two categories of a pure substance? Elements and Compounds.
What is an Element? An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Why does an element have a fixed, uniform composition? Because it contains only one type of atom.
What are the two types of mixtures? Heterogeneous mixture, and Homogeneous mixture.
What is a compound? A compound is a substance that is made from two or more simpler substances and can be broken down.
What size are the particles for Solution, Colloids, Suspension? Solution=Small, Colloids=Intermediate, Suspension=Large.
