Belfy chapter 2

QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Chemistry The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
Substance A single type of matter that is the same throughout (pure)
Physical Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Chemical Property A characteristic of a pure substance that describes it's ability to change it into different substances.
Elements Pure substances made of all the same kind of atom.
Atoms The smallest particle of matter from which all elements are made.
Chemical bond A force of attraction between two or more atoms.
Molecule Two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond.
Compound A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined.
Mixtures A type of matter made of two or more substances , elements, compounds or both that have not chemically combined. Each substance keeps it's origional properties. The parts are not in a set ratio.
Heterogeneous mixture A mixture that you can see the different parts that make it up. (Nuts and bolts)
Homogeneous mixture A type of mixture that is so evenly mixed that you cannot see the individual parts
Solution A type of homogeneous mixture. The particles of one substance fill the spaces between the particles of another substance.
Seperating mixtures physically. Filtering, using a magnet, evaporating, using tweesers, straining, distilation.
Weight A measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
Mass A measure of the amount of matter.
International System of Units A system of measuring used by all scientists. Abreviated(S.I.)
Common SI Units Mass = Kilogram Volume = cm3 or mls. Length = Meters
Volume The amount of space that matter takes up.
Density The relationship between mass and volume for a given object.
Density Formula D = Mass / Volume
Volume Formula V = L X W X H
Volume of Irregular shaped object. Final volume - Initial volume
Physical Change Any change in matter that alters the form or appearance but not the matter it'self. Particles are the same before and after.
Chemical Change A change in matter that produces one or more new substances.
Law of Conservation of Mass The fact that matter cannot be created or destroyed during any chemical or physical reaction.
Energy The ability to do work.
Temperature A measure of the average energy of the motion of the molecules of a substance.
Thermal Energy AKA Heat energy. The total energy of all the particles in an object or substance.
Endothermic A chemical or physical reaction that takes in heat.
Exothermic A chemical or physical reaction that gives off heat.
Kinetic energy The energy of matter in Motion.
Potential Energy The energy an object has because of it's position.
Chemical Energy A type of potential energy stored in the bonds that hold atoms together.
Electromagnetic Energy A form of energy that travels through empty space as a wave.
Electric Energy The energy of electrically charged particles moving from place to place.
Electrode A metal strip put in a solution with a wire attached to allow the flow of electricity during electrolysis.
Electrolysis A chemical change that uses electricity flowing through a solution.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
