SALT Phy Science

QuestionAnswer
once water transpires (transpiration) from a plant, what water source is it in? condensates into a cloud (condensation)
water's in an ocean and ends up in a cloud, what 2 hydrologic cycle processes occurred evaporation and condensation
salinity a measure of the mass of dissolved salt in a given mass of water
firn a dense icy pack of old snow
water table the line between the water saturated soil and the soil that is not saturated with water
percolation the process by which water moves downward in the soil toward the water table
adiabatic cooling the cooling of a gas that happens when the gas expands with no way of getting more energy. *This is what's responsible for most cloud formation!
cloud condensation nuclei small airborne particles upon which water vapor condenses to form clouds
if you tasted sea ice, would it taste like freshwater or saltwater? saltwater because sea ice is ocean water that froze where glaciers are snow on the mountains that slip into the ocean and are freshwater. So frozen ocean water does not become a glacier. its called sea ice & isnt as salty as ocean water.
where do icebergs come from glaciers
where to glaciers come from snow getting packed down from the top of mountains and sliding into the ocean
what is the term for the process by which a portion of a glacier breaks off and falls int o the water calving
understand what makes temperature change if molecules are in a compressed area & nothing changes, the temp. would stay the same. If the molecules were allowed to expand, they wouldn't be bumping into each other as much and gas would cool. If molecules were compressed the gas would get warmer
understand the water table - what is it? how does it change? the water table line would be deeper if there was a lot of precipitation and the ground became more saturated. On the contrary it would be more shallow in a drought as the ground dries up and is not saturated
what kind of water pollution is the hardest to track back to its source? groundwater because it flows to the lower water source and could come from anywhere.
the captain of a ship sees an iceberg and steers clear of it. Why is the captain still worried? because 90% of icebergs are under water so he could still hit it
brine when saltwater freezes, the solid water surrounds little packets of highly concentrated packets of salt water called brine
A bright student notes that with a few modifications, a refrigerator can become a "hot box" keeping things warm instead of cold. Explain if you reverse the coils by putting the pipes that carry the compressed gas on the inside which will make it warm on the inside and put pipes with expanded gas on the outside
in which area would the water table be higher - one with lots of trees or one with few trees? few trees because the more the trees, the more they would absorb the water bringing the water table lower
why is the salinity of the ocean evidence that the earth is not billions of years old? because scientists have studied how much salt gets put into the ocean every year & there would be much more salt in the water if the earth really were billions of years old.
