Work and Machines

QuestionAnswer
when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force work
the unit used to express work; the newton-meter joule
the rate at which work is done power
the unit used to express power; joules per second watt
Explain the difference between work and power. Work occurs when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force while power is the rate at which work is done
a device that helps make work easier by changing the size or direction of the force machine
the work you do on a machine work input
the work done by the machine work output
tells you how many times the machine multiplies force; compares the force input with the force output mechanical advantage
a comparison-expressed as a percentage-of a machine's work output with the work input mechanical efficiency
How does using a ramp make work easier? it allows you to apply a smaller input force than you would need to lift a load straight up
Whay can't a machine be 100% efficient? some of the work input is used to overcome friction
If you exert 15 N on a machine, and the machine exerts 300 N on another object, what is the machine's mechanical advantage? 20
What is the mathematical formula for mechanical advantage? output force / input force
What is the mathematical formula for mechanical efficiency? (work output / work input) x 100
a simple machine consisting of a bar that pivots at a fixed point called a fulcrum lever
a simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface inclined plane
a double inclined plane that moves wedge
an inclined plane that is wrapped in a spiral screw
a simple machine consisting of two circular objects of different sizes wheel and axle
a simple machine consisting of a grooved wheel that holds a rope or cable pulley
machines that are made of two or more simple machines compound machine

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
