state of matter
| states of matter | definition |
|---|---|
| freezing | the phase change from liquid to a solid, material must lose energy(temperatures=decreases); exo= heat out |
| freezing point | the temperature at which a substance begins to freeze. |
| vaporization | phase change from a liquid to a gas, material must gain energy(temperature=increase); endo=heat in. It can be divided into two catergories; evaporation and boiling. |
| evaporation | phase change from a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid below the boiling point which is slow vaporization. |
| boiling | the phase change from a liquid to a gas throughout the entire liquid. |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a substance begins to boil. |
| condensation | the change in phase from a gas to a liquid, material requires a loss of energy(temperatures=decreases); examples: dew, sweat on a cold glass, clouds. |
| sublimation | the change in a phase from a solid to a solid to a gas without going through a liquid phase. Examples: shrinking ice cubes in a freezer. |
| deposition | the phase change from a gas to a solid without going through the liquid phase(frost). |
