PropertiesofWavesVoc
describes the terms needed to know for the properties of waves quiz
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| mechanical | which sometimes means physical movement, mechanical waves must have a medium to travel through |
| electromagnetic wave | produced by the vibration of an electrically charged particle |
| medium | any matter that has molecules to transport the wave's energy |
| vacuum | a place with almost no matter, like space |
| tranverse wave | goes in a direction that is perpendicular in which the wave is traveling |
| longitudinal wave | goes in direction parellel to the direction in which the wave is traveling |
| amplitude | the maximum distance the wave moves from its resting position |
| crest | the tops of the waves |
| trophs | the bottom of the waves |
| pitch | describes how high or low a sound is |
| decibels | units that sound is measured by |
| wave intensity | the amount of energy the wave is carrying |
| wavelength | the distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave in the wave train |
| frequency | (in a set of waves) how many waves pass by a specified point in a specified amount of time. |
| hertz | stating cycles per second is call hertz |
| electromagnetic spectrum (ems) | entire range of electromagnetic waves |
| the doppler effect | the increase or decrease in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves |
| spectrum | the combo of wavelengths |
| red shift | when a star is moving away from earth, the light is appearing redder than it actually is (longer wavelengths) |
| blue shift | stars moving closer to earth have their light waves showing more blue (shorter wavelengths) |
