Pure Substances Simply a substance. Table salt and Table sugar are two examples of pure substances.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into similar substances
Atom Is the smallest particle in an element
Compounds a substance that is made from two or more substances and can be broken down into simpler substances
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture of water and substances that dissolve in water.
Heterogeneous parts of a mixture that are noticeably different from one another
Solution When substances dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture
Suspension A heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time
Colloids Contains some particles that are intermediate in size between the smaller particles in the solution and the large particles in the solution
