States of Matter
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solid | state of matter in which the particles of matter are closest together, having a definite shape and a definite volume. |
| liquid | state of matter in which the particles are free to move over, under and around one another; particles are farther apart than in a solid. |
| gas | state of matter in which the particles are moving the fastest and are the farthest away from each other. |
| plasma | state of matter that is achieved under very high temperatures, no definite shape. |
| kinetic-molercular theory | differences in the state of matter are caused by how fast the atoms in substance are moving |
| endothermatic | physical change in which energy is observed, the temperature of the substance change |
| exothermic | a process or reaction that releases energy in the form of heat |
| melting | the phase change from a solid to a liquid, material to must gain energy. |
| melting point | the temperature at which a substance begins to melt |
| freezing | the phase change from a liquid to a solid, material must lose energy |
| freezing point | the temperature at which a substance begins to freeze |
| vaporization | can be divided into two catergiories evaporation and boiling |
| evaporation | phase change from a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid below the boiling point |
| boiling | the phase change from a liquid to a gas throught the entire liquid |
| boiling point | the temperature at which a substance begins to boil |
| condensation | the change in phase from a gas to a liquid, material requires a loss of energy |
| sublimation | the change in phase from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid phase |
| deposition | phase change from a gas to a solid without going throughout the liquid phase |
