Object Relations

Object relations All relations are based on early life experiences; early relationships set the patterns for future interpersonal relationships
Attachment Theory internal working models underlies associations between early attachments and subsequent close relationships; workers use to evaluate strengths and weakness in the client's relations and respond accordingly
"Good Enough Mother" provides the best ego development/acquire a true sense of self. Not about being perfect caregiver; over-caring can prevent the child from learning to self sooth; under-caring can cause a child to develop mistrust, splitting, and projective identification
Object loss and ego weakness when external objects fail to respond to child's needs, the surviving ego (essence of true self) experiences fear, shame, and retreats; causes fear of positive relations and acceptance of negative relations.
Stage 1: Preliminary Diagnosis of Relational Pattern therapist assesses the patient's patters of interaction over the life span to determine personality structure.
Stage 2: Building the Therapeutic Alliance therapist focuses on the here and now and healing quality with the patient
Stage 3: Identifying Maladaptive Relational Pattern therapist sorts out potential countertransference
Stage 4: Patient Expresses Maladaptive Pattern most intense stage; patient relates to therapist in the same previous manner; patient not aware; therapist is, but uses to explore the nature of the therapeutic relationship
Stage 5: Therapist Generates Empathetic Confrontation Therapist remains empathetic, but after making patient aware of patterns, refuses to take part in it; instead "confronts" the patient with the pattern.
Stage 6: Working Through the Confrontation patient may become uncomfortable; therapist must remain empathetic but form and consistent as the patient struggles to change patterns in relational style
Stage 7: Generalizing the Therapeutic Relationship Therapist shares experiences of being a part of the maladaptive relational style of patient allowing the patient to understand their impact on others; Patient is strengthened by internalizing positive relational example with therapist
Stage 8: Separation and Termination Review the relationship; anxiety producing, but understanding that the relationship continues in own self-structure.
TLDP (Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy Allows worker to use corrective interpersonal countertransference- the worker utilizes themselves to offer a corrective experience
