Unit Two Vocab
Physical Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| motion | a change in an object's position relative to a reference point |
| distance | the length an object travels, measured in SI units of meters |
| displacement | distance and direction of an object's change in position from the starting point |
| speed | distance an object travels oer unit of time |
| velocity | the speed and direction of a moving object |
| reference point | A basis or standard for evaluation, assessment, or comparison; a criterion |
| vector quantity | Quantities which possess two fundamental characteristics, namely magnitude and direction |
| scalar quantity | Quantities that have only magnitude, eg mass, temperature and volume |
| constant speed | speed that does not change |
| average speed | the total distance traveled divided by the total time elapsed |
| instantaneous speed | the speed of an object is the magnitude of its velocity (the rate of change of its position); it is thus a scalar |
| acceleration | rate of change of velocity; can be calculated by dividing the change in the velocity by the time it takes the change to occur |
| deceleration | a decrease in rate of change |
