Question | Answer |
---|---|
what are the 7 essential structures that make up the eye? | cornea, pupil, iris, lens, retina, fovea, and blind spot |
cornea: | the curved transparent layer through which lights rays enter the eye |
pupil: | an opening just behind the cornea through which light rays enter the eye |
iris: | the colored part of the eye which adjust the amount of light that enters by constricting or dilating the pupil |
lens: | a curved structure behind pupil that bends light rays, focusing them on the retina |
retina: | the surface at the back of the eye containing the rods and cones |
where are the rods and cones located? | in the retina |
rods: | type of sensory receptor used for night vision (blacks) |
cones: | sensory receptors important in color |
where are the rods and cones located in the retina? | rods = outside, cones = middle |
fovea: | the area in the center of the retina in which cones are highly concentrated |
blind spot: | the point in the back of the retina through which the optic nerve exits containing no rods or cones; the exit point is insensitive to light |
smell AKA | olfaction |
process of smell: | molecules of a substance travel through air into nasal passages, reach receptors in nasal cavities, cilia "feel" the smell molecules, impulse travels through nerve fibers to olfactory bulb |
what are the receptors in the nasal cavities called? | olfactory epithelium |
where is the olfactory bulb located? | just below the frontal lobes |
what causes us to taste? | receptors on the tongue (BUDS), electrical impulse, brain areas |
what are the 4 types of taste buds on your tongue? | bitter, sour, salty, sweet |
How do we hear? | ear, auditory canal, ear drum, oval window, semicircular canal, cochlea, cilia, auditory nerve, brain |
eardrum: | tissue vibrates when hit with sound waves which moves 3 tiny bones... |
what are the 3 bones in your eardrum? | malleus, incus, stapes |
malleus = | hammer |
incus = | anvil |
stapes = | stirrup |
these three little bones hit another membrane called the: | oval window |
fluid waves through: | semicircular canal and cochlea |
this fluid moves: | tiny hairs |
pheromones: | chemicals |
Pheromone studies: | gross t-shirt study and moths |
myopic: | nearsightedness |
hyperopic: | farsightedness |
light/dark adaptation done by: | iris getting smaller or bigger |
pupillometry: | can be used as a lie detecter; pupil constricts when it sees something aversive |
who studied pupillometry? | Hess |
