Science 8 Unit I
Physical Science Unit I Test Review
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| what is an observation? | an examination of evidence: facts obtained through your five sense |
| what is an assumption? | an answer NOT based on real evidence |
| what is a conclusion? | answer based on observation, proof and real evidence |
| what is a law? | what actually happens; fact |
| what is a theory? | tries to explain how and why something happens: explains the law |
| what is physics? | the study of energy and how things work |
| what is chemistry? | study of matter and its changes, and what things are made of |
| what are the five steps of the Scientific Method? | • Problem • Information • Hypothesis • Experiment – Materials, Procedure, Data & Diagram Conclusion |
| what are the three steps that make up the experiment? | Materials, Procedure, Data & Diagram |
| what is a control? | a duplicate setup of the experiment performed with everything identical except for the variable tested. |
| what is a constant? | Not changing; all the other things in the experiment that stay the same |
| what is a variable? | What is being tested in the experiment It is important to have only ONE variable in order to know what causes the outcome |
| what is a control group? | Does NOT contain variable |
| what is an experimental group? | Does contain variable |
| what are the four general properties of all matter? | Mass, weight, volume & density |
| Why is air matter? | It takes up space (balloon), has mass, weight, and density |
| what is mass? | The amount of matter in an object |
| what is the measurement of mass? | grams |
| what is the difference between mass and weight? | Mass always stays the same (unless you cut your arm off, get a haircut, or go on a diet) and weight depends on gravity and changes depending in your location (the moon is a smaller planet, so it has less gravity, so you weigh less on the moon). |
| Why do scientists prefer to measure the mass of matter rather that its weight? | Mass will always be the same regardless of location |
| what is inertia? | An object resistance to motion or resistance to its change in motion |
| what determines the inertia of an object? | mass |
| what is volume? | The amount of space an object occupies |
| How do you get the volume of a rectangular solid? | Length x Width x Height |
| What unit is used to measure the volume of a liquid? | Milliters (mL) |
| What unit is used to measure the volume of a solid? | Cubic centimeters (cm3) |
| How can two things with the same volume have different masses? | Different densities |
| what is density? | The amount of mass per unit volume m/v |
| How do you determine the density of matter? | Mass divided by volume |
| What are the units of density? | g/cm3 or g/mL |
| Does 1 liter of Coke have the same density as 2 liters of Coke? | Yes! Same material will have the same density |
| What are the two sciences that make up Physical Science? | Chemistry and physics |
