Writing Mechanics Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Adverb Describes or modifies verbs adjectives or other advebs. "ly" ending, "en" ending etc...
Preterite Actions that took place IN THE PAST
Modifier/ Modifying Phrase A word or phrase that explains or describes
Fragment Occurs when word groups standing alone are missing a SUBJECT or VERB
Shift in verb tense Verb tenses must refer to the same time consistently, UNLESS a change in time is required.
Faulty Parallelism Two (2) or more elements stated in a single clause that should be expressed with the same (parallel) structure. EX. She needed to be BEAUTIFUL, SUCCESSFUL and FAMOUS. (all adj.)
Comma Splice Appear when only a comma joins two sentences
Adjective Description word
Capitalization of names i.e. Mom & Dad Don't capitalize names unless the are being used in direct address or before a proper name
Semicolon Separate two or more closely related independent clauses Ex. I climbed to the top of the mountain; it took me three hours.
Italics Punctuate titles of long works of literature, names of periodicals, publications, artwork, musical scores etc...
Colons *Used to introduced lists *Emphasize what follows
Comparative Adverb Used when comparing two things. Ex. Caroline sings more BEAUTIFULLY than her sister.
Participle Used to compound tenses or voices (modify) Shares characteristics of both verbs and adjectives "en" ending
Pronoun Substitutes the noun. ex. I, me, you, them, they, it
Noun Person, place or thing.
Ability in the Writing Assessment (The exam itself) will demonstrate *Ability to write to appropriate audience, purpose or occasion *Ability to prepare unified and focused writing *Ability to develop and support topic *Ability to organize information *Effective sentence structure *Ability to spell, capitalize & punct
Verb Conveys action i.e. washed ate, studied
