Safety/Measurement
Study Stack for Unit 1A on Safety and Measurement
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is intelligence fixed at birth or able to be changed? | It is ever changing as you learn new information which "grooves your brain" (building up nerve pathways and adding new neurons)! |
| What is a scotomoa? | A sensory blind spot to information |
| How do we get scotomas? | Some ways are past conditioning, self-talk, what you are focusing on, what others focus you on, your beliefs and your expectations. |
| What are some traits that get in the way of human potential? | Habits, Attitudes, Beliefs, and expectations - all inside of you stuff that you can learn to control for more success! |
| What is a balance used for? | Measuring mass |
| What is a graduatated cylinder used for? | Measuring the volume of a liquid |
| What is a beaker used for? | It is NOT for measuring. It just holds chemicals. |
| Where is the fire blanket in the lab and what is it used for? | There are two. One on the side and one up front. They are used for putting out fires on a person. |
| Where is the fume hood in the lab and what is it used for? | It is in the back center of the lab. It is used for chemical reactions that make bad fumes or might spark or splatter out on us. |
| Where are the chemical spill pillows in the lab and what are they used for? | They are on top of the goggle sanitizer and are used for cleaning up chemical spills under the direction of your teacher. |
| Where is the safety shower/eyewash in the lab and what is it used for? | It is along the side near the back and is bright yellow. It is used for rinsing chemicals off a person or out of their eyes. |
| What are some things you never do in the lab? | Never mix chemicals without asking or following directions, smell something directly, goof off, not tell the teacher when something spills or breaks, work without glasses or goggles, use the bunsen burner without putting long hair back or sleeves up... |
| What is the safe way to smell something? | Waft it |
| What is the safe way to heat something in a test tube over a bunsen burner. | Use test tube tongs and hold it high up over the flame to heat it gently and DO NOT point it at anyone. |
| What is the safe way to pour an acid | Pour it down a stirring rod and pour the acid into water. |
| What is the safe way to carry the balance. | Carry it by the base, not the sensitive balance/measuring arm |
| Name the steps to lighting the bunsen burner | 1. Turn off both the gas and oxygen valves on the burner 2. Turn on the gas 1 turn and the oxygen 1/4 a turn 3. Turn on the gas at the table 4. Light it with the flint striker 5. Adjust the oxygen until you get a clear blue flame |
| Define Mass. | Mass is the amount of matter in something. |
| Define Volume. | Volume is the amount of space something takes up. |
| Define length. | Length is the distance between 2 points. |
| Define Temperature. | Temperature is how hot or cold something is because of the movement (kinetic energy) of its particles. |
| Define Time | Time is the interval between 2 events happening |
| What is the SI unit and measuring device for length? | meter, metric ruler or meterstick |
| What is the SI unit and measuring device for volume of a liquid? | L or mL, graduated cylinder |
| What is the SI unit and measuring device for mass? | g or kg, balance |
| What is the SI unit and measuring device for Temperature? | Degrees Celsius or Kelvin, thermometer |
| What is the SI unit and measuring device for time? | Second, stopwatch |
| Name the metric units from smallest to largest | milli, centi, deci, (base), deka, hecto, kilo |
| Which metric prefix means 10 | deka- |
| Which metric prefix means 1/10 | deci |
| Which metric prefix means 1000 | kilo- |
| Which metric prefix means 1/1000 | milli- |
| Convert 18 mm to cm | 1.8 cm |
| Convert 52 g to mg | 52,000 mg |
| Convert 1600 m to km | 1.5 km |
| Convert 2.3 L to dL | 23 dL |
| Convert 120 lbs to kg (Honors only) | 54.5 kg |
| If a sampe of pumice has a mass of 225 g and takes up 236.6 mL, what is the samples density | 0.95 g/mL |
| Define density | Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance. |
| What is the SI unit for density? | g/mL or g/cm3 |
| Measurements in science always have a ___ and a ___. | number and a unit or label (exmaple: 5 g) |
| Describe the correct way to measure the volume of a liquid in a graduated cylinder. | First you must get down on eye level and read to the bottom of the meniscus. They you must also make a "guess between the lines" which is one more decimal place than the device's lines read. |
| What us a measurement standard? | It is a quantity that people agree to use for measurements like the size of a meter or kg? |
| What is the SI system | It is the agreed apon world wide measurement system based on powers of 10. It is commonly called the metric system |
