meter the number of beats per line
alliteration repetition of beginning sound
repetition the use of the same element more than once
onomatopoeia words that mimic sounds
denotation the dictionary meaning of a word
connotation the emotional meaning of a word
figurative language language that is not meant to be taken literally
simile "her eyes are like stars"
metaphor "her eyes are stars"
personification "her eyes danced"
narrative a poem that tells a story
haiku three-line poem with a 5-7-5 meter
free verse a peom with no set pattern of rhythm or rhyme
concrete a poem written in a particular shape
limerick five line poem with 3-3-2-2-3 meter; usually humorous
ballad songlike poems that tell stories of adventure and romance
lyric poetry that expresses the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker
