abiotic factor | a nonliving factor found in an ecosystem |
abiotic examples | sunlight, space, temperature, water |
biotic examples | spider, sunfish, tulip, dog, tree |
ecosystem | a place where living and nonliving things interact with one another |
organism | this word is a synonym for biotic because it means a living thing |
population | all the members of one species living in a particular area at a particular time |
resource | something that a living thing needs for survival |
resource examples | food, water, shelter |
limiting factors | factors that limit the size and growth of a population |
limiting factor examples | space, nutrients, predators, water, sunlight |
carrying capacity | the maximum population size that can be supported by an ecosystem |
competition | an individual or population needs the same resource |
competition example | plants grow over one another trying to get sunlight to survive |
food web | a series of overlapping food chains that show the path of energy among organisms in an ecosystem |
predator | hunts other animals for food |
prey | is hunted by animals |
population change | a group of animals could decrease or increase |
