Sound
4th grade science
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is pitch? | how high or low a sound can be. It is effected by the sound of a wave |
How can you increase the pitch of a sound? | increase the frequency by making the strings longer or shorter and thicker or thinner. You can also add more mass to effect the frequency. |
What is frequency? | the number of crest/troughs in a soundwave that occur over a given amount of time. |
How can you increase the frequency? | Change the length of the object being struck. |
What is an oscilloscope? | A machine that shows a 3D image of a soundwave. |
What does an oscilloscope show? | It records the frequency, amplitude, and pitch of a sound wave. |
Sound is a form of _________________ | energy |
What types of waves are created when there is a soundwave? | Longitudinal waves |
In what conditions do sound waves travel faster? | warmer conditions |
In what conditions do sound waves travel slower? | cooler conditions |
When do we not hear sound at all? | empty space. Outer space is a vacuum and we hear no sound. |
Describe the process starting with soundwave until the signal reaches the brain. | Vibration occurs, making a soundwave. Wave travels to outer ear and into ear canal. Ear drum vibrates, striking 3 smallest bones in body. Causes bones to vibrate, traveling to cochlea. vibrates tiny hairs, transfer to auditory nerve signal to brain. |
what are the three smallest bones in the body? | hammer, anvil, and stirrup |
What is an echo? | when a soundwave bounces off of a smooth hard surface |
What is a vibration? | the rapid movement back and forth or up an down |
Describe the trough and crest of a wave | crest is highest point of the soundwave, the trough is the lowest point of a soundwave |
What is amplitude? | related to volume, how loud or soft a sound can be. It is the distance between the crest and the resting point or the trough and the resting point of a sound wave |
What is wavelength? | the distance between one crest to the next or from one trough to the next trough. |
