U.S. Constitution | Seven articles--and subsequent amendments--that provide a workable framework for our federal government. |
republic | System of government whereby citizens elect representatives to decide issues. |
democracy | Governmental system whereby citizens vote directly to decide issues. |
political party | Private organization of citizens who select and promote candidates for public office. |
Declaration of Independence | Document drafted by representatives of the 13 original colonies that asserts the rights desired by the colonists. |
sovereignty | Freedom from external controls. |
due process | Constitutional requirement for fundamental fairness in our legal and court sustems. |
legal duties | Obligations or standards of conduct towards others that are enforceable by law. |
Bill of Rights | The first 10 amendments to the constitution of the U.S. |
legal rights | Benefits to which a person is justly entitled by law. |
